Choosing what to measure
A framework for matching search metrics to the decisions a team needs to make.
This is an early working note. We will add examples, sources, and fuller evidence as this topic develops.
Make the decision explicit
Before building a dashboard, write down the decisions it should support. A content team planning revisions needs a different view from a leadership team allocating budget.
Use several kinds of evidence
A metric rarely tells the whole story. Pair quantitative signals with page review, audience questions, and the limits of each data source. Keep the connection between evidence and recommendation visible.
Revisit the measure
A useful measure can outlive its original purpose. Set a point to check whether the number still helps the team make a better decision, and retire it when it does not.
